Graphic novel sales are up 70% since 2019. I personally think it’s because social media has trained us to consume a certain kind of content (heavy visuals, low word counts, quick snippets) and comics and graphic novels are sophisticated reflections of that. But what do you think? I’ll write a full, researched piece on this over the weekend (or sometime soon).
I agree with that. Once my daughter “graduated” from picture books, she had a tough time finding things that she wanted to read. The first graphic novel she checked out from the school library was one I had to buy and replace a few times because of the tattered pages from reading and re-reading. I have purchased the entire series (first book was “Smile”), and tons of others for her over the years. Every single one ends up tattered and I couldn’t be happier that she’s a reader.
