Striking the right balance between being grateful for what we have / have achieved and what we aspire yet to achieve is an art! :)

Thank you for sharing. I salute your tenacity! I’m curious about your dissatisfaction. I can imagine if I were to publish a book, I would be thrilled and it would feel anticlimactic. I can imagine exhaustion coupled with a bit of disillusionment. The pennies on the effort. I am not you, however, and my words may not resonate. Are you reaching for the next challenge? Does being a writer sometimes feel unrelenting(even though that’s what you want to do)? Is the goal of being a self(+)-sufficient writer your guiding star, the distance too large to measure your steps against?

Thanks for asking, Grace. Dissatisfaction is such an interesting word choice because lately, I've said that satisfaction is my goal. So yes, not feeling satisfied with my current position as an author is cause for this emotional disposition, which is connected to my goal of being a "self sufficient" writer, as you put it. My goal is to wake up and write books and until I reach that goal, I don't think I will ever be satisfied. That said, I am so grateful with where I am now. Thinking of being published by Penguin and Scholastic are literal dreams and I would be lying if I didn't appreciate being in this position. But it's just another step on my journey and there's only one ending that matters for me.

Writing for your life ? this is a very outside melody.

An extreme way of putting it Kern you are not a political prisoner in some right wing totalitarian regime. We all have options like supplementing our writing life with a job - in fact most writers I know do have full time jobs and are comfortable with this arrangement for their writing goals. They are realistic now with the new era of the Tariff wars and geopolitical uncertainty.

In fact you could say the number one best seller and top of the NYT charts at the moment for the next four years is reading what is going to happen next in the daily news. So like it or not writers have to learn to adapt, set realistic expectations to work and navigate within the new limits in this changed environment and have the best of luck. It was never easy but this time is even harder.

Oh I've been adapting for my entire author career. I've feelanced and had jobs this entire time. These are just my thoughts and goals and vision for myself. It's the most ideal achievement for me and a challenge that excites me, but I still ghostwrite and do other creative projects to make a living.
